3D Printing for Prosthetic Limbs

There are about 24 million physically disabled people in China. Although scientific and technological progress has created artificial limbs for the disabled, the extremely high cost of manufacture, installation, and maintenance has made many families unable to afford it. The emergence of 3D printing has brought good news to low-income families and children.

ASDAN China joins hands with Enabling the Future, a world-leading 3D printing community caring about public interest to allow students to make artificial limbs by 3D printing. Qualified limbs will be donated to needy children with physical disabilities in China through official channels.

The significance of 3D technology lies in its ability to present ideas on paper and then materialize them into a tangible entity that is precise, specific, and understandable. This program has greatly enhanced my modeling skills. I was exposed to modeling in elementary school, which was essentially early-stage 3D printing. At that time, modeling was relatively rudimentary, and the operations were very simple, so we could not create models as complex as those seen today. 3D technology holds great promise for my future studies in materials science. I will need to model on my own and create some small items to assist in researching scientific findings, thus contributing to our daily lives.

My favorite part was assembling prosthetics. We completed the polishing and assembly of the prosthetic limbs based on the issued parts and finally used the assembled prosthetic limbs to compete in table tennis ball transportation. Our group made a concerted effort and finally achieved a good result, ranking third in the competition. Through this process, I gained a clearer understanding of some components and facilities of prosthetics, as well as the basic principles of prosthetic movement, which greatly helped me in the following days' schedule.
